Alan Cottrill

Alan Cottrill is a Zanesville-based sculptor perhaps most well-known for large commissions and statues with an additional body of work composed of smaller, more intimate pieces housed at his large studio in downtown Zanesville. Alan has created one of the largest bodies of work of bronze statues by any living sculptor with commissioned monuments throughout the United States. His work has been described as being powerful, virile, and full of life, energy, and complexity.

Full Biography

Alan was born and raised in the Appalachian region of Ohio, and was the first person in his family to graduate from high school. After a stint in college, the army, and truck driving, Alan founded a successful fast-food chain and soon became an international entrepreneur. He was invited by the US Department of Commerce to participate in various trade missions throughout the world. Through these travels, Alan was able to visit the world’s major art museums and galleries. In addition, Alan became an avid art collector and painted in his spare time.

In 1990, he touched clay for the first time, declared “This is the mistress I’ve traveled the world in search of,” and has dedicated himself to figure sculpting ever since. He sold his business interests and committed himself full-time to becoming one of the finest figurative sculptors in the world. Toward that end, Alan moved to New York City and studied at the renowned Art Students League and the National Academy of Design and studied Human Anatomy at Columbia Medical Center. During his studies, Alan took numerous trips to Europe to witness and learn from the world’s greatest sculptures in person.

Today, Alan is now known for his large-scale sculpture commissions and has installations of historical figures across the country. Beyond large-scale commissions, examples of Alan’s additional works include smaller-scale partial reproductions of commissioned pieces with the original installations found anywhere from libraries to memorials. Cottrill’s works also include singularly unique pieces loosely inspired by his fascination with ancient Japanese bells, as well as figure studies, including some of those he first created in 1992.

In 1996, Alan and his lifelong friend Charles Leasure founded the bronze casting foundry Coopermill Bronzeworks in Zanesville, Ohio. To date, they have cast well over 500 of Alan’s statues into bronze as well as hundreds of other sculptors’ work. Additionally, Alan maintains a studio and gallery in Zanesville, Ohio that is visited by thousands of tourists a year.
